SHAWNEJEAGAMIK means...

House of Compassion in the Algonquin Language. It is an Aboriginal Drop-In Centre for First Nations, Inuit and Metis people who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.

Mission Statement: Shawenjeagamik is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of our Aboriginal Homeless Community. It is a place where everyone will be treated with respect and dignity. Our protocol will be guided by the Seven Gifts of the Grandfather Teachings: Honesty, Humility, Trust, Love, Bravery, Caring, and Courage. Practicing these principals will allow us to grow in shared wisdom. This will be carried out through our cultural teachings in a safe, warm and friendly environment.

The Centre will be staffed by Front Line Workers, Outreach Workers, Housing Specialists, Visiting Nurses, Elders, Monitors and Attendants. Three hot meals per day will be provided on a scheduled basis.

Hours of Operation:
- 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday
- 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday
- Weekend activities for clients will be planned.
- Laundry and shower facilities are available on a scheduled basis.

Shawenjeagamik will provide a secure and culturally appropriate place where people can use the services that we offer, which are:

Life skills: Financial management, hygiene, self confidence, time management, nutrition, teamwork and cultural teachings.
Referral Services: Health centres, food banks, housing, addiction centres, emmployment services.
Crisis Intervention: Suicide prevention and counselling services.

The Centre is made possible through the Homelessness Initiative of the City of Ottawa and the Urban Aboriginal Coalition consisting of: The Odawa Native Friendship Centre, The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, and Minwaashin Lodge. It operates under the umbrella of the Odawa Native Friendship Centre.

The City of Ottawa administers Ottawa's share of funding under the Federal Government's National Homelessness Initiative "Supporting Communities Partnership Initiative (SCPI)" program. This funding is used in support of the goals of Ottawa's Community Action Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness.
